I think that some film music actually add to the messages conveyed by a
film.  A prime example would be the music to the film "A Patch of Blue"
We are watching the external lives of the characters but the music shows
us--reflects, the interior lives of the characters--giving us a whole
new dimension to what we are seeing with our eyes.  This has been done
over and over again in truly good film music.
