When Eve Queller conducted some 1970's opera performances in St.  Louis she
was referred to as "Maestra." Also, the St.  Louis Philharmonic assiduously
referred to Louisa Kellam as their "concertmistress" for years.  The
maestro/maestra dichotomy is probably more befuddling to English speakers
than it is to those who speak Spanish or Italian where such a distinction
is an everyday matter of grammar.
