Except for the fact that there are currently so many more Bach keyboard
recordings than in previous generations, I can't see any basis for this
claim.  I've noticed in the stores that when they replenish the stock of
Gould's WTC and Goldberg Variations, they're snapped up very quickly; this
happens with no other artist.

Concerning recent discussion about Gould having a cult-status and no
wide-spread appeal, I think that label might apply to a pianist like
Edward Aldwell (Nonesuch/Biddulph); Gould is way beyond cult status.
