I don't know if they still do, but Nimbus used to record using a system
called "Ambisonics", which allegedly captured more of the ambient sound of
the room.  Unfortunately, to get the full effect you need - guess what? -
a decoder.  Supposedly they were 100% stereo compatible, but they always
seemed a bit over-resonant somehow.
