Conductor James DePreist Undergoes Kidney Transplant
Associated Press
- 5 December 2001
PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) - After waiting six months for a transplant,
Oregon Symphony conductor James DePreist has undergone surgery to
receive a kidney from an anonymous donor.
DePreist, 65, went into surgery just before noon Monday at Legacy
Good Samaritan Hospital & Medical Center, said Maggie Huffman, a
spokeswoman for Legacy Health Systems. The donor, who declined to
be named, came forward in October, Huffman said.
DePreist, who joined the Symphony in 1980 and frequently conducts
other orchestras in the United States and around the world, was added
to the transplant list in May. He suffers from kidney disease, which
is incurable, but DePreist has said a new kidney "lasts indefinitely."
DePreist has been on kidney dialysis for almost two years. He had
said he was doing well with treatment, but decided to get a transplant
on the recommendation of his doctor. He expects his recovery to take
six weeks or longer.
