Daegu Int'l Opera Festival to Open in September
By Cathy Rose A. Garcia / Korea Times / July 9

Daegu, the third largest city in the country, will usher in the sound
of opera this September. The Daegu International Opera Festival will
feature opera performances for 50 days from Sept. 1 to Oct. 20.

With the theme "Love that finds you once in a lifetime," the festival
will showcase the best opera performances from eight countries, namely
Korea, Italy, Germany, Japan, China, Austria, Mongolia and Bulgaria, and
18 organizations.

The festival starts on Sept. 1 with maestro Chung Myung-whun conducting
a performance of Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" and "Symphony No. 40."

Fans of the classic Puccini opera "Madame Butterfly" will be delighted
to see three different interpretations by Korea, Italy and Japan from
Sept. 13 to 15. "Tradition of Asia" will feature operatic performances
from Korea, China and Mongolia on Sept. 6.

Austria's Marionette Theater of Schonbrunn Palace will perform "Die Sage
Vom Donauweibchen" on Sept. 7 and 8. Germany's Karlsruhe National
Theater will stage Mozart's "Der Schauspieldirektor" on Sept.19 and 20.

Bulgaria's Sofia National Opera and Ballet Theater will perform Verdi's
"Otello" on Oct. 12 and 13.

Korea's National Opera will perform Verdi's grand opera "La Traviata"
on Oct. 19 and 20. From Oct. 5 to 7, the Daegu City Opera will perform
"Cavalleria Rusticana," composed by Pietro Mascagni.

On Oct. 17 and 18 the Daegu Opera Festival Choir will perform "The
Wedding." Other operas to be staged during the festival include opera
"Asadal and Asanyo" and "The Springtime." The operas will be performed
at different venues such as the Daegu Opera House and Bongsan Art Center.

The Daegu International Opera Festival, which began in 2004, is organized
by the Daegu Opera House and supported by the Daegu Metropolitan Government.
Daegu is hoping it will become a top cultural destination.
