To me, too, Bocelli sounds better singing pop schmaltz than ariating
verismo schmaltz.  But at least he doesn't make me cringe.  For
cringe I tend to do when, say, Carreras tries roaming Tin Pan Alley.
Even Ezio Pinza made me wince. But I'm speculating that some of the
great verismo arias, especially those expressive of love, could
have been made to sound quite well--well, persuasive -- by the likes
of a Sinatra or a Como--singin' in Italian. Electronically fortified,
of course, and preferably coached by Christopher Webber. (Might
have gone over big both at the Santa Cecilia and the Scala! Big
lire!
