August on MUSIC ON THE WEB (UK)

The latest news is that we are undergoing a site survey by the leading UK
Internet Magazine sometime soon, concentrating mainly on the Film Music
site. In preparation for this, that site is undergoing a revamp and Helen
San is preparing a new front page for us. Work in progress can be viewed
from the Film Music front page. Among other things there is now a complete
alphabetical listing of Film Music reviews by composer.

On the Classical front we have added articles on Jon Larchet (David
Wright), Egon Wellesz and Anthony Hedges (Paul Conway). We review a Hedges
CD this month too. The British Music Society has also moved its web pages
to Music on the Web (UK). In preparation is a new section of Live Concert
Reviews under the direction of Peter Grahame Woolf. The thinking behind
this is that there are fewer outlets for concert reviews than there used to
be, and specialist magazines such as "Strictly off the Record" and "Knowing
the Score" have foundered, so that younger musicians can no longer count on
getting reviews to help advance their careers. If you wish to contribute
such reviews they would be gratefully received. I am also willing to
publish the CVs of young artists on this site if they care to enquire.

COMPETITION
Well! After being inundated with entries last month I decided that my
search engine made it all too easy to find the answer so I set a more
oblique question for July. This is obviously proving more of a challenge
with many fewer correct entries. So, if you can come up with a correct
answer you will stand a pretty good chance of winning!

AUGUST CLASSICAL REVIEWS
These have just been posted on the Force9 and the US server (which is
faster than Force9 even in the UK!) The disc of the month for me is Raymond
Clarke's staggering performance of the two Shostakovich piano sonatas. We
have two reviews of this disc this month and more to follow. (At the time
of posting the sales link of this new release cannot be established so keep
coming back to the page). Of other new releases you can read our opinion
of Kennedy, the Erato Britten Double Concerto disc and Gidon Kremer
performing the Vasks Violin Concerto. That disc is so hot off the press we
do not have the notes or cover art! We have a number of very interesting
discs that can only be purchsed on-line from the suppliers. These include
the realisation by Joseph Wheeler (Edited by Robert Olson) of Mahler's 10th
symphony, predating Deryck Cooke's, which gets a very detailed review from
Tony Duggan, two superb Cello Sonata discs from David Finckel (cello), Wu
Han (piano), only available direct from them, and two rarities on the
Portugese label Portugalsom: Fernando Lopes-Graca (1906-1994) Twenty Four
Preludes played by Miguel Henriques (piano) and Joly Braga Santos (1924-88)
Symphony No. 4 conducted by Pereira. We hope for more to come from that
source. We have a further five reviews of the music of Reger to add to
those of last month and there's lots more ............. Don't forget we
currently have special offers on the Chandos 2for1 recent releases (see
July CD reviews) and the complete Redcliffe range of British Music (you
will find the link from Classical Front Page)
