Barber's *Vanessa* is often ranked near the top, as is Virgil Thomson's
*Three Saints in Four Acts* - but also Cage's *Europera* and Sessions'
*Montezuma* and Glass' *Einstien* on the beach.  Adams *Nixon in China*
gets nods from some as well.

Depends on the partisan persuasion of the person tabulating the list,
and which group of people they hang out with.
