   Verdi's 'Nabucco' Tests Vocal Stamina

   VERONA, Italy - Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Nabucco" is a musical
   gem in which the star is a cluster of voices - the chorus.

   Under the stars of an August sky on Saturday night, the Arena
   di Verona chorus illuminated an uneven performance sprinkled
   with thrilling moments.

   The main solo draw was American soprano Andrea Gruber of New
   York's Metropolitan Opera, who passed the test of greatness
   as measured by Verona locals: Can a voice be heard across the
   walls of the 16,000-seat open-air arena, by someone without
   a ticket sipping coffee in the piazza?
