With the Mac G4 you don't need a separate sound card; the computer's
processor does all that work.

There are a number of outboard USB boxes -- mic preamp (usually 2) and RCA
line level -- that are powered by the Mac thru USB.  You load audio editing
software that is bundled with the box, boot up the Mac, and you're ready to
go.

My personal favorite is the M-Box, which you can see on-line at
www.sweetwater.com or www.fullcompass.com.
