When I lived in California I saw Salonen and the LAPO give an incandescent
account of the Firebird. In the closing chord sequence, the orchestra
responded to Esa-Pekka with a sound that I have never heard before or
since, live or recorded. I wish he had recorded this piece, which will
never be quite the same for me again. There were also rave reviews of his
Turnagalila a couple of years ago. Dark and brodding - perhaps. Cold --
not in this listener's book!
