I once conducted Beethovens third overture to Leonore and
directly afterwards Luigi Nonos Il canto sospeso. To avoid
a gap there was a reading from a letter by a camp prisoner
of 1945. The man had written: In Beethovens opera the saving
trumpet sounds, but never for me. No one applauded after the
overture, the music went on without interruption. A lot of
people came to me afterwards and said: Now Ive understood
   something.
