In answer to John Nottle's query:

>Does anyone know when Philip Farkas left the Chicago Symphony

>accompanying notes he left sometime in 1960. As my daughter also has
>a 1960 recording of Don Juan played by the Chicago, with Fritz Reiner
>conducting she is wondering if it is Mr.Farkas playing the famous Don
>Juan motif."

Philip Farkas left the CSO at the end of the 1959-60 season to teach at
Indiana University. Whether or not he led the section in that Don Juan
would depend on whether it was recorded in January-May 1960 (yes) or in
the fall of that year (no). Does the recording give a more exact date?

There's also a 1954 Don Juan, in which he definitely plays. I'm not sure
that one has made it to CD.

In any event, I should point out that the famous lick in question is played
by the entire section in unison-4 to 6 players!
