Mitch on military bands:

Military bands are notorious havens for great wind players. Not all of
them are top notch--some aren't very good--but many are, including the
big ones in DC. My brass ensemble got a huge boost when we moved our
rehearsal venue closer to Hanscom Air Force base. They have a band
there, plus a brass quintet, and several members play with us. So do
some people from a local National Guard band. Some are pros. And for
the record, our group plays some tough music. Military bands are no
secret to musicians. They audition in the union paper and periodically,
I'll run into some hotshot planning on an audition and it's for a military
band.

When I was in school, the West Point band was a great haven for those
wanting out of the Vietnam War. A lot of great players played there for
four years.
