It's a single-movement adagio for full orchestra, subtitled "Homage to
Thomas Hardy". It is slow, pensive and brooding (inspired, the notes say
here, by a visit to Hardy in Dorset, 1927). Very much of the English
pastoral school, but more tart than sweet. Not a personal favorite, as
it rather meanders throughout and never "arrives" anywhere. Still, some
lovely impressionistic writing.. About 16 minutes. You can find it on
Chandos 9420 with some other short Holst pieces, including Hammersmith
(one of Holst's masterworks) in the orchestral version, the lovely
Somerset Rhapsody, and A Fugal Overture. LSO/Hickox.
