Now's the time that symphony orchestras are finalizing their programming
for next season, so I thought it would be appropriate to discuss an
unknown, underutilized, or ignored resource for programming ideas--Listers.

Most of the input for programs comes from, in order of importance: Music
Director, Artistic Advisor (if available), Exec Director, Marketing Dir
and Development Dir, with additional input from visiting conductors,
soloists, board members, and hardly ever, the audience. When audiences
are asked, the results are "predictable," so I'm told: 3 Bs and other
well known works.

But what if some orchestra asked us: what underplayed works would YOU
like to hear at your nearest symphony orchestra? There are many pieces I
love on CDs, but somehow they never get performed. I think part of the
reason is that music directors and their satillites don't have the time
to listen to many new or newly discovered works, whereas some of us
indefatiguable CD collectors would have dozens of possibilties that
would probably be audience hits.

Here are some rare works I'd like to hear that I think audiences would
like, works that are hardly ever played, works that I've never heard
live. What are yours?

Franz Schmidt: Sym 2
Any Rontgen work
De Sabata: Juventus
Geirr Tveitt suites
Hindemith E-flat symphony
Pettersson: Sym 7 (maybe an audience challenge)
Pftizner: C# minor symphony
Rezac: Angel on the Rubbish Heap
