A few months ago, there were several postings alerting listers to the
availability of the entire 200-CD set for $400 or less from cut-out
specialists like Berkshire. I jumped at that opportunity and am gradually
working my way through the set, alphabetically (I'm up to Gilels).

If you can't score the whole set cheap, then I would suggest you pass on
the Big Names (Argerich, Arrau, Brendel, Horowitz, Richter, Rubinstein,
etc.), whose work will be endlessly available via various reissue programs,
and pick up the sets from the lesser-known artists, particularly from the
pre-stereo era: Cortot, Fischer, Francois, Friedman, Gieseking, Ginsburg,
Hess, Hofmann, Moiseiwitch, Sofrontisky, etc. You get well-selected
capsule surveys of the careers of an earlier generation of pianistic
heroes, with usually good notes (the ones not written by the impenetrable
Ates Orga).
