Had a chance to hear the NY Phil her in Miami with Maazel, a fine
orchestra but my opinion of Maazal remains unchanged. Opened with
selections from a Midsummer's, etc. of Mendelssohn the Mozart's Prague,
all well and good, but then........second half was Beethoven's 5th. Is
Maazel a lunatic? Me thinks so, The first movement was way too fast by
far, the fastest I have ever heard, the rest was glossed over. I though
at first he had damned the details to hit the salient points but
no.....his dynamics were operated by a light switch and there was
absolutlely no preparation of anything....I hope they have not signed
a long temrn contract with him.
