Not quite what was asked for, but still of interest, I have a handsome
book -- book + CD boxed set, actually -- titled Gravikords, Whirlies and
Pyrophones: Experimental Musical Instruments, by Bart Hopkin, published
by Ellipsis Arts in 1996.  It profiles 37 more-or-less loony backyard
instrument inventors and their creations.  Leon Theremin and Harry Partch
you know, most of the rest you've likely never heard of.  The CD has
18 tracks featuring the instruments.  Photon Clarinets, anyone?  Worth
seeking out on abebooks or ebay.  It could once be found stacked high
at better remainder outlets for 1/3 of its $30 list price.
