One reason for founding the NBC Symphony, was that the AF of M was
finally driving the non-union Boston Symphony off the air. NBC broadcast
the last of a regular series of broadcasts on April 22, 1937. After
this the only significant broadcast was the dedication of the Music Shed
at Tanglewood on April 4, 1938. This left NBC with a need for a major
symphony orchestra.

When the BSO was unionized in 1942, they returned to the air on NBC.
However, the Blue Network was sold in 1943 and so the BSO once again
left NBC. In 1948-1951 NBC broadcast a series of half hour rehearsals
of the Boston Symphony, as well as a few broadcasts from Tanglewood.

As soon as NBC decided to eliminate the NBC Symphony and prior to the
actual shut down, they began negotiations with the Boston Symphony to
return to NBC, in 1954. The correspondence is in the BSO Archives.
NBC carried the broadcasts through 1957.
