I don't know that there's an answer because it depends on the system
on which you're playing your CDs, the recording level of a particular
CD, the sound qualities in your listening room and most importantly, the
volume preference of the individual. So if I said 40% of maximum volume,
on your system that might be all but inaudible or loud enough to have
your neighbours call the police. A friend of mine who wouldn't know a
clavichord from his elbow - he might suggest it's a support for a broken
collar bone - likes his music at a volume that, even though I like my music
loud, I consider marginally below the threshold of pain. He also has his
bass control wound up so far that the spiders in the garage under his
listening room are probably the most neurotic in the country. I suspect
they'd like the ambience at Felix's place!
