I'd asked:

>Can anyone tell me what this phrase - 'ex aequo' - means when applied to a
>prizewinner in an international piano competition?

And several people wrote, some privately, to tell me it means 'tied' for
first prize, second prize, etc. I thank them all.

But I must say I laughed long and hard at Jim Hunsley's creative
translation:

>How about "fresh from the [blood] bath?"!
