Good question/topic. For me...well I was lucky. I heard "classical"
music around the house since before I can actually remember. My dad,
of course, was in the orchestra and I attended some rehearsals when
I was,,,ohh...maybe 10-11 years old. (I promised to keep quiet).
I distinctly remember sitting in the brass section during a rehearsal
of Capriccio Italien. Boy was I hooked!

I was familiar with Mozart, Beethoven, etc. by middle school and
I discovered Bach in High School. None (as in zero) of my friends
appreciated classical music. But I still played it at home. I was also
lucky in being able to listen to he New York City classical stations, WXQR,
WNCN, WNYC. I learned a lot from listening to those sources. My dad's
friends would get together and listen to recordings. I listened-in.

In college I listened to it with earphones since it drove my roommates
crazy.

I was fortunate to be able to become a classical music "disc-jockey" for
several years in Portland, OR. I learned a lot by reading liner notes
voraciously.

I feel sorry for the kids these days since about the only entree to
classical music (if it's not played in the home) is through school. They
don't do that any more, it seems. The dumbing-down of America. Too bad.
