"Weaving Japanese Sounds" - Pianist Sachiko Kato Presents Takemitsu
Birthday Bash on October 17 at New York's Klavierhaus
"Weaving Japanese Sounds" and Klavierhaus will present "Weaving Japanese
Sounds - Takemitsu Birthday Bash" - with pianist Sachiko Kato celebrating
the 75th Anniversary of the birth of Toru Takemitsu on Monday, October
17, 2005 - 7:00 PM at Klavierhaus, 211 West 58th Street in Manhattan.
This concert will showcase Ms. Kato performing all of Takemitsu's
piano solo pieces from across his career and works by the composers that
inspired and influenced him along with brief talks by the pianist about
these influences.
The program will feature Takemitsu's Litany (1950, Rewritten in 1989),
Uninterrupted Rests (1952, 1959), Piano Distance (1961), For Away (1973),
Les yeux Clos (1979) and Les yeux Clos II (1988), Rain Tree Sketch (1982)
and Rain Tree Sketch II (In memory of Messiaen) (1992).
Ms. Kato will also present works by Webern, John Cage, Debussy, Duke
Ellington and Olivier Messiaen.
Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996) was a giant in 20th Century Japanese cultural
life and in international contemporary music. He wrote hundreds of works
for the concert platform, as well as 93 film scores, a detective novel
and critical works on music, film and literature. You can find more

"Weaving Japanese Sounds" Founder and Artistic Director Sachiko Kato
is a pianist known for her diverse repertoire and keen interest in
Japanese new music. She was chosen to represent Juilliard alumni among
100 most successful artists Juilliard has produced in the recently
published magazine "Dance, Drama, Music: 100 years of the Juilliard
School." She has enchanted audiences all over the United States with her
beautiful sonorous sound in a wide range of repertoire. A winner of the
Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition and the Pro-Piano Recital
Series Audition, Ms. Kato made her Carnegie Weill Hall recital debut
in 1994. Since then, she has performed extensively throughout the United
States and Japan. She has been heard at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully
Hall and Performing Arts Library, Steinway Hall in New York, the Los
Angeles County Museum, Norris Theater of Performing Arts in Los Angeles,
