Mischa Levitzki(1898-1941, Piano
Naxos Historical 8.110688
Recorded 1923/33
TT 77:00

Cited as Volume 1 of a three volume traversal, this disc isn't quite new
to March. However, I've been enjoying it so much that I decided to trot
it out as my March disc.

Levitzki(1898-1941) was one of the most popular pianists of the first
half of the 20th century, although his name recognition has fallen off
greatly since then. He did have his detractors including Horowitz who
referred to his playing as "awful". All I can say is that Horowitz was
a better performer than critic.

I have found the disc an absolute delight. Naxos has chosen a number
of relatively light pieces which Levitzki plays with more charm and
playfulness than most other pianists of his era. Included are two Chopin
etudes, two Chopin waltzes, and a host of other lovely pieces.

The sound stinks, but Levitzki's charming ways win out. I find the disc
a perfect antidote to depression, and it costs much less than a visit
to the local psychologist. Given the low price tag, what are you waiting
for?
