Fiachra Gibbons, Arts Correspondent and Kate Connolly in their article on
Rattle vs. Barenboim for the BPO:

>Ambition
>
>Barenboim, 56, has made no secret of his ambition to emulate his
>hero, Herbert Von Karajan - who led the orchestra for three decades
>- or his willingness to ditch the Chicago Symphony Orchestra if the
>call came.

Gorblimey, can't they get it right? DB's great idol is Wilhelm Furtwangler,
not Karajan!

Personally, I wish I could warm to Barenboim's conducting, but there is
always an element of self-conscious ponderousness about it. What CD of
his would you recommend to convince me "it ain't so?"
