Several listers have advised me that a PTA is a Parents and Teachers
Association. Whatever they're called, they do wonderful work, including
raising money for musical instruments. In this neck of the Antipodes,
with apostrophes ad lib, it's called a Parents and Friends Association.
A secretary once mistyped this as Parents and Fiends Association, which
I liked so much that I used it ever after.
