It's time for my semiannual plug for eMusic, a subscription service that
offers legal, high quality (192kbs VBR) MP3s with no DRM. For $20/month,
you get 90 tracks, which, in the classical world, can be quite a few
albums. eMusic's classical catalog used to be somewhat deficient, but
take a look at the labels that are now available:

Naxos
BIS
Harmonia Mundi
Ondine
ASV
Analekta
Collegium
Soli Deo Gloria (Gardiner's Bach cantata label)
Signum
Eroica
Tomato
RCO Live

and a host of others. It's not a perfect service, but it's a great way
to explore inexpensively. And, no, I don't work for them; I'm simply a
very satisfied customer.
