Interesting coincidence, but I just read a Richard Dyer interview in
the Boston Globe with Marek Janowski, who is returning to Boston to
guest-conduct the BSO for the first time in six years. The maestro is
conducting a concert version of "Hansel & Gretel," and says that he only
does opera-in-concert these days, because he has become so disillusioned
with working with iconoclastic stage directors who put their own agendas
ahead of the music. So Janos has a strong second from the Continent on
this issue--given Boston's weather this week, the trenchcoat can't be
far behind.
