A friend in Berkeley writes, somewhat dismayed:

"Why are concerts in this area so much more expensive than just
about anywhere else? Cecilia Bartoli with Orchestra La Scintilla
of Zurich Opera (Oct. 23). Prices $105-$53, c.f. Zellerbach
at UC Berkeley - $250-$50. The Boston Celebrity Series 2005-2006
is very interesting, including the prices: Opening Night Gala
(Sept. 25) is Yo-Yo Ma, cello recital Prices $78-38 Try to
imagine what that would cost in the SF Bay Area.

"Other artists include (* also appearing the Bay Area, however
under four different sponsorships, rather than one):

"Staatskapelle Berlin, Mozarteum Orch. of Salzburg, London Phil.*,
(the new streamlined) Deborah Voigt, Hvorostovsky*, Ewa Podles,
Vadim Repin*, Itzhak Perlman* (with Zukerman, alas), Schiff*,
Goode*, Perahia*, Pollini, Wu Man and Ensemble, Julliard*?,
Takacs*, Emerson*?, Royal Ballet, Martha Graham Company*, Mark
Morris Dance Group*, Alvin Ailey*, The Chieftans*, Soweto Gospel
   Choir"

My question, replies offline are fine (and appreciated): do you have
price information, showing significant differences head-to-head, on
the presentation of artists, especially against Bay Area costs?
