I read something interesting not long ago to the effect that because
the German-speaking peoples were not unified until the second half of
the 19th century, their literature, music, etc. was more important to
them than their politics, and politics was not considered a worthwhile
occupation for an upstanding gentleman. Maybe this is why a psychopathic
corporal was able to take the nation to complete disaster in the 20th
century.
