My method of listening to my record collection is based on the theory of
*random placement*. I have an entertainment center which was custom made
to house approximately 2,500 cd's (including multiple sets). Only those
cd's likely to be wanted in coming months are privileged to reside in those
drawers. The rest of the collection could be anywhere in the house that my
wife does not frequent.

The cd's in the drawers are in a random order of my own making. Therefore,
each drawer has the maximum level of musical variety afforded by my
collection and represents a little recorded world unto itself.

You might think, if you're still reading this, that I have tough decisions
as to which drawer to open and pick from. But, I let the minute hand on
the kitchen clock take care of that. There "was" a reason for the thirty
drawers.

Once the clock has made the drawer selection, I take all the cd's out of
it. I separate them based on my notion of heavy, medium, and light (sort
of like starch - I once worked in a Dry Cleaners). I select about 5 cds
from each pile, decide whether I'm feeling heavy, medium, or light, then
start playing one of the right-mood cd's. I can't miss with this method
as each drawer has great stuff for any mood.

You might not believe the above, but if you looked through my drawers, and
I'd have to know you better to allow this, you would be convinced of my
truthfulness.

Eccentric? Perhaps. Efficient and satisfying? Certainly.
