There is no saxophone in the Nutcracker.  What Mike hears at the
point he mentioned is a combination of bass clarinet and bassoon which I
readily agree sounds like a saxophone (especially in the Previn recording).
Another orchestra combination which gives the same sound is french horn,
english horn and clarinet which several composers have used.
