Simply put, they're unbelievably expensive at this point, at least in the
major markets, and whenever one is available it is usually snatched up by
one of the huge corporations who now own most of the commercial stations in
the land, because TV and radio stations (except for classical music ones)
are basically licences to print barrels of money.

We in the Philadelphia area tried to buy a station when the commercial CM
station bit the dust a couple of years ago, but it was impossible to raise
the requisite moolah, and there are some pretty deep pockets around.  Yes,
the USA is the home of free enterprise, but that simply means that the
spoils go to the richest.
