Clarinetist Michael Norsworthy to Premiere Noel Zahler Concerto for
Clarinet, Chamber Orchestra and Interactive Computer with Columbia
Sinfonietta - March 10 at Miller Theatre, Columbia University

Clarinetist Michael Norsworthy will join the Columbia Sinfonietta,
Jeffrey Millarsky, Director, to present the World Premiere of Noel
Zahler's Concerto for Clarinet, Chamber Orchestra and Interactive Computer
on Saturday, March 10 - 8 PM at Miller Theatre on the campus of Columbia
University, Broadway at 116th Street in Manhattan.

The concert, American Electronica, will also include Ronald Bruce
Smith's Flux for flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass clarinet, percussion,
violin, cello and electronics and Roger Reynolds' The Angel of Death
for chamber orchestra, solo piano and 6-channel computer sound, with
piano soloist Stephen Gosling.  A special state-of-the-art sound system
will be set up in Miller Theatre for the concert, at which all three
composers will be present.

Noel Zahler's compositions include a wide range of vocal and instrumental
works, as well as electroacoustic, interactive and multi-media works.
His compositions have been performed by the American Composers Orchestra,
The Arden Trio, The Charleston String Quartet, the Meridian String
Quartet, the League of Composers/ISCM, Center for New Music at the
University of Iowa and other ensembles throughout this country, in Europe
and Asia.  CDs of his music are available on the Opus One and Centaur
labels.  In addition, Dr. Zahler is the co-author of three computer
software programs including the Artificially Intelligent Computer
Performer, Score Follow and Music Matrix.  More about him online at

A dedicated and persuasive champion of the music of our own time,
Michael Norsworthy has given premieres of over 80 works in collaboration
with composers Harrison Birtwistle, Elliott Carter, Chris Dench, Pozzi
Escot, Brian Ferneyhough, Michael Finnissy, Lukas Foss, Hans Werner
Henze, Magnus Lindberg, Ralph Shapey and Marc Anthony Turnage, among
many others.

As soloist, Michael Norsworthy has performed an extensive repertoire of
concerti, ranging from Mozart to Ferneyhough, with the Aspen Contemporary
Ensemble, Callithumpian Consort, NEC Contemporary Ensemble, Pottstown
Symphony, Soria Chamber Players, Southern Illinois Symphony and Symphony
Pro Musica, while audiences have heard his numerous recitals in Boston,
Cambridge, Chicago and St. Louis.  He has also collaborated with Tony
Arnold, Patrick Demenga, Stephen Drury, Aleck Karis, John Zorn, the
Borromeo String Quartet, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Modern
Orchestra Project.  Conductors he has worked with include Boulez, DePriest,
Knussen, Levine, Muti, Robertson, Ozawa, Tilson Thomas and many others.
Michael Norsworthy plays on Buffet Clarinets and mouthpieces by Kalmen
Opperman.
