Perhaps she's taking her cue from Philip Glass:

He not only never seems to smile in any portrait, but the pictures are
often apparently taken just after he's glued his thumb to his chin
*again*.

Maybe a serious expression is PR shorthand for "serious musician", just
as academics are often pictured in front of shelves of books so that we
know they're brainy.

I still don't comprehend the thumb-chin thing, though.
