It is my understanding that the Canon Committee will soon meet - the first
meeting of this august but mysterious group in fifty years. There is no
official announcement- there never is. My information is based on some
graffitti seen on walls in and about Symphony Hall, and in the Orange Line
MBTA station nearby. Also, some odd messages on the Personals page of the
local rag. In other parts of the world, pigeon entrails and ouija boards
have given similar indications.

The meeting will be held in a small fishing village near Hudsons Bay.
This is not a particularly pleasant venue this time of year, and it
is not readily accessible. As a consequence the anticipated raucous
demonstrations of adherents agitating for their favorite non-canonical
composers will be held to modest scale. Nielsenites,Enescites, Janachezchs
will show up, even Ellingtonians, and surely Messianists, but in manageable
numbers.

After a month of deliberation, the Committee will disperse. No public
report of their findings will be made, but the results will somehow filter
down to the impresarios, conductors, critics, etc., etc., who preside over
repertories and help us make sound choices. True lovers of classical music
await the results with eager anticipation.
