Jeffrey James, writing about concerti of Benjamin Lees, lists:
>Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra - 21 minutes - premiered by
>the Paganini Quartet and the Kansas City Symphony in 1965 - more than 80
>subsequent performances by major and regional orchestras, most recently
>(November 1998) presented by Leonard Slatkin and The New York Philharmonic.
A small quibble. The orchestra involved was the Kansas City Philharmonic.
I know, I was there! The KC Phil died in the early 1980s and was succeeded
by the now vibrant Kansas City Symphony. This premiere, unlike some of new
music, was a smashing success. I still remember the excitement I felt at
hearing my first Lees. Steve Schwartz and I have commented in this List
about the worth of the Lees "Memorial Candles" Symphony newly released on
Naxos.
