Ron Chaplin if a hybrid multichannel SACD can be played only on a SACD
player.

No.  It can be played on any of three formats:

1. standard 44.1 KHz 16-bit CD players (stereo)
2. Super Audio CD Player (stereo)
3. Super Audio CD Player (multichannel, surround sound)
