It is my favorite solo piano work of the composer.  I have not heard the
Pletnev version.  One my favorite recordings is quite old, originally
issued on the Rachmaninoff Society label, later reissued on MGM.  It
contained the Chopin variations as well and featured pianist Bernhard
Weiser.  I would also recommend the recordings done by Warren Perry Thew
for the same label.  His recordings of the Etudes Tableaux ops.  33 & 39
are quite wonderful.
