Left-wing.  Probably sort of Fabianism at a guess.

She was indeed Joy IIRC.  Britten's Metamorphoses (?) was written for her.

There is a most enjoyable Hyperion disc of the 2 string quartets and oboe
quartet (IIRC).  Delightful and more impressive than his symphonies (or at
least nos.2 & 3 which I have).
