In preparation for the San Francisco `Ring,' opening next week,
I looked through the boxes kept since the '85, '90 and '95 events,
and (re)discovered Glenn Gould's Wagner CD (Sony SMK-52650):

-- Gould conducting musicians of the Toronto Symphony in the
`Siegfried-Idyll,' the original 13-instrument version, in his
conducting debut and last recording, 1982.

-- His 1973 piano transcriptions of the `Meistersinger' Prelude,
Siegfried's Rhine Journey, and -- again -- the `Idyll' (23:31 against
the orchestral version's 24:29).

It's a great way to get a new wrinkle on what has become old hat for
some...:)
