There is a worth 2 CD set of both symphonies+ the symphonic poems "Russia"
and "Tamara" + the "Overture on Three Russian Themes", conducted by
Svetlanov on a Hyperion dyad. The set is available rather cheaply at
Berkshirerecordoutlet.  The extreme notes themselves are worth the price
of admission.  In my fast summary the author claims that most things
worthwhile not only in Rimsky-Korsakov but even in Tchaikovsky are both
derived from Balakirev and that Balakirev did them better in all cases
of which numerous examples are provided.  Now I leave it up to you to
decide.  I do listen to this set every so often as the man was important
