Ed Zubrow:

>However, when I listen to the music of an American composer such as
>Charles Ives, I find that the folk tunes, spirituals and hymns which
>are quoted are distracting. I can't avoid pausing and thinking: "A ha!
>There is Turkey in the Straw."

Why get past it? Surely that's what he intends, isn't it? Whenever I hear
Brahms' 'Academic Festival Overture' I always sing the first line or two
of 'Gaudeamus igitur'. I love it when that happens. Same with Ives's
'Columbia, Gem of the Ocean', etc.
