I think the relatively frequency of solos, esp. clarinet and oboe,
changed dramatically over the first few decades after the clarinet was
introduced.  There are IIRC two versions of Mozart 40 (1788), one with
one without clarinets.  And very few symphonies before that used it at
all.

By the time Mahler was in full flight he's giving solos to various member
sof the clarinet family, with the E flat clarinet producing a particularly
Mahlerian diablerie.
