It was formed I think entirely for studio work and had players of the
calibre of Dennis Brain, Leon Goosens et al.  Can be heard on many
wonderful old British movies of the period as well as some classical
recordings.

As for the LSO connection; Richard Morrison's new book on the LSO's
history, says that in 1955 "the principals flounced out and set up the
Sinfonia of London." This was apparently over a dispute about allowing
players to accept outside film work.

The City of London Sinfonia has no connection and is a chamber orchestra.
No wonder people are confused by the names of London orchestras!
