It's been interesting to see how the repertoire of the St. Louis Symphony
has shifted (and how audiences have often complained) over the tenure's of
its various music directors--from the eclectic Susskind years where Czech
and English music gained considerable prominence to the more "centered"
tenure of Jerzy Semkow which included a "Beethoven festival" season which
was first lauded and then condemned to the American niche that the
orchestra cut out for itself under Leonard Slatkin. Now that Hans Vonk
is at the helm people are looking for the orchestra to turn toward the
French repertoire. Quite a switch.
