Is there such a thing as essential Reinecke? Probably not, but Reinecke
(1824-1910) was an excellent musical craftsman whose recordings can provide
much pleasure.
The recording at hand is a new disc of chamber works with horn on the
Timpani label. The works consist of a trio for horn, oboe and piano,
a trio for clarinet, horn, and piano, and a nocturne for horn and piano.
All this music is lovely and easy to digest. Performances and sound are
top of the line.
Essential to have? Not even close. But, this type of music has, in my
opinion, great capacity to cheer up one's day and provide relief from the
stress of a normal workday. It's not "wallpaper" music; it has substance
- somewhat like Finzi from an earlier time period.
