I really like the Bernstein/ VPO, too.  The polishedness belies the fact
that it was recorded from live performances.

I would also recommend Sir Colin Davis and the Dresden Staatskapalle for
the 40th.  It is the most powerful and clearly-recorded performance I have
ever heard of almost anything.  Every section of the orchestra comes out
distinctively.  Might not appeal to period-instrument fans but for me the
recording is a great sonic experience and makes my ears shake.
